The day I was asked if I knew there was a marching band in Guatemala is a day I will never forget. I remember it well.
It was in January 2016 and I was teaching an adult flute student online when her husband joined her on the video. They asked me if I thought I could help the students in the marching band at Morning Glory Christian Academy which is in San Raymundo, Guatemala. My students had been sponsoring children in this organization for many years and were going to see them in August. I had an instant knowing, deep inside, that God was calling me to share His love through music education and to lead the children in skillful praise and worship music. The third verse in Psalm 33 came to me, “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.”
I started teaching wherever I could
I visited Guatemala 5 times that year. I taught the children in the marching band about melody and rhythm and the children in two different children’s homes, one near Antigua and the other near Guatemala City, to tell the story of Jesus’s birth through song and scripture. This year, 2023, will be my 7th annual Christmas Music Program at Casa Aleluya.
8 years later...
God has me living in an apartment on the grounds of Casa Aleluya and teaching about 100 of the children that live there how to play piano and sing. I transcribe their favorite church songs and coordinate their lessons with the songs being sung in church that week.
